Shangyou Hydropower Station, Ganzhou
The Shangyou River Hydropower Station primarily focuses on power generation, while also providing comprehensive benefits such as flood control, irrigation, and navigation. It is located in Dou Shui Town, Shangyou County, Jiangxi Province. The Shangyou River originates from the deep hilly area in Rucheng County, Hunan Province, flowing through Rucheng, Chongyi, and Shangyou in Jiangxi, and merges into Zhang River at Sanjiangkou in Nankang District, Ganzhou City, with a total length of 200 km and a drainage area of 4,565 square kilometers. The Shangyou River Reservoir is composed of three rivers: Guting River, Chongyi River, and Yingqian River.
The installed capacity of the power station is 4x15,000 kW, with a designed annual power generation of 290 million kW·h. After single-unit capacity expansion modifications, the installed capacity has reached 4x18,000 kW. In early 1954, to address the urgent electricity needs of the tungsten mines in southern Jiangxi, the project was approved by the central government and included in China's first five-year plan construction projects. The power station officially started construction in March 1955, and in November 1957, the unit began generating electricity, completing a dam with a height of 67.5 m and an installed capacity of 60,000 kW in an incredible two years and eight months in a deep mountain gorge. It is the largest hydropower station in terms of installed capacity put into operation during the first five-year plan after the founding of the country!
