There is a very simple answer to this question. An external maintenance bypass switch allows your UPS to be maintained and even replaced without affecting power to your vital load. The switch allows the supply to be swapped from UPS fed to mains fed without a break whilst carrying out repairs to your UPS or if your old UPS were to fail and a new one is required, this can all be done with no downtime to you.
